“Erik ten Hag decision is not a new a new things…I was told”: Harry Redknapp reveals Man United’s decision on Erik ten Hag and reveals who will be Man United manager next season

Published

Harry Redknapp has revealed who he thinks Manchester United really want as their next manager.

The Red Devils are still reviewing whether or not to continue with Erik ten Hag at the helm. It really did seem like the Dutchman would be sacked, but following United’s FA Cup win at Wembley, there’s a small chance he will keep his job.

However, Redknapp thinks INEOS really want to appoint another manager as he ticks all the boxes they want. If it does happen, it will not be a popular choice.

Harry Redknapp makes Gareth Southgate claim while talking about Mauricio Pochettino to Manchester United

Manchester United have been linked with a number of managers in recent weeks.

Ten Hag did win the FA Cup, but it has to be said that his team’s performance for large parts of the 2023/24 campaign was beyond underwhelming.

Manchester United finished eighth in the table after winning just 18 of their 38 games in the Premier League. That is an awful record.

That could cost Ten Hag his job in the coming days, and if it does, Manchester United will have to bring in a top-quality replacement.

Mauricio Pochettino is available after parting ways with Chelsea, and Redknapp has admitted that he is a big fan of the Argentine.

However, the 77-year-old believes INEOS really want to appoint Gareth Southgate as Manchester United’s new manager because he ticks all the boxes they are looking for.

When asked if he would take Southgate over Pochettino at Old Trafford, Redknapp told talkSPORT: “No, I love Poch. Yeah, Poch is free. I mean, would they get rid of Ten Hag and go to (Poch)?

“I think Southgate is the man they really want. That’s my, but I love Poch, you know. He has got to get back. He will be back in soon somewhere, that’s for sure.

“So, it will be interesting, but I think I’ve just got a feeling Southgate ticks all the boxes with the people that run the club.”

Redknapp also claimed that he thinks Manchester United are just waiting to see how England will fare at the Euros before deciding on sacking Ten Hag and appointing Southgate as his replacement.

Pochettino or Southgate – who would be better for Manchester United?

Manchester United need to get their next appointment right if they part ways with Ten Hag.

Pochettino and Southgate have both been heavily linked with the Old Trafford hot seat, and it will be interesting to see if they end up being the final two names on INEOS’ shortlist.

If the choice is between the two of them, we think it should be a very simple decision.

Pochettino has achieved a lot more success than Southgate at club level. In the 2023/24 season, the Argentine helped them finish sixth – above Manchester United – despite having a shocking first half of the campaign.

Southgate, who has been labelled as ‘brilliant‘ by Roy Keane, just saw his England side put up yet another underwhelming display, this time against Iceland, who are ranked 72nd in FIFA’s rankings.

Pochettino would be a much better fit for Manchester United, but like Redknapp, we too believe Southgate might get the nod.

“My client is only interested in Man United transfer and I can’t force him to do what he doesn’t like”: Agent of Man United’s transfer target responds to Pep Guardiola eye-watering offer to hijack Man United transfer

The spotlight is on Matthijs de Ligt as far as Manchester United are concerned.

After attempting to sign Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite, who appears to have been priced out of a move, United have switched their attention to Netherlands star De Ligt.

Most of you will remember his performances for Ajax when they last reached the Champions League semi-finals, under Erik ten Hag in 2019, but he has been unable to reach those heights at Juventus or Bayern Munich.

Ten Hag may be able to get the best out of De Ligt, which is why United are trying to sign the 24-year-old centre-back this summer.

According to BBC Sport, United believe they are making progress in their attempts to sign De Ligt.

United held talks with De Ligt’s advisors about a potential move to Old Trafford, while Bayern are trying to trim their wage bill.

De Ligt is currently in Germany with his country at the European Championship. That said, he is not starting in games under Ronald Koeman.

The Dutch defender has been unable to cement his place in the Bayern Munich team and the German club has been linked with moves for new centre-backs this summer.

No wonder they are willing to listen to offers for De Ligt, who is reportedly willing to take a pay cut at United.

United need to find a partner for Lisandro Martinez in the heart of defence following Raphael Varane’s departure. We need someone of high quality who is reliable and not injury prone.

De Ligt gives green light to Manchester United

In another update this afternoon, transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano claims De Ligt has given a green light to United after direct contacts with his camp.

Romano doesn’t believe personal terms will be an issue as his agent, Rafaela Pimenta is only negotiating with United, which is a priority of the player.

Manchester United are now set to appoint Christopher Vivell as their new director of recruitment, according to Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg.

Vivell most recently worked at Chelsea, leaving Stamford Bridge around a year ago. The 37-year-old wasn’t there long, and he’s now available once again with United looking to bring him to Old Trafford. Sir Jim Ratcliffe has stamped his authority at the club since arriving, bringing in a host of different people behind the scenes.

Dan Ashworth was recently confirmed as a new appointment, but it appears that United aren’t stopping there in terms of backroom additions.

Vivell to Man Utd Now a Done Deal

He will join as director of recruitment.

Sky Sports reporter Plettenberg has confirmed that Vivell is set to complete a move to United with immediate effect as director of recruitment. The 37-year-old will move to Old Trafford on a short-term deal and will help in terms of transfers for the Manchester club…

“Understand it’s a DONE DEAL: Christopher Vivell is set to join Manchester United with immediate effect as their new Director of Recruitment! All that’s missing is the work permit for the 37 y/o. The former Technical Director from Chelsea with many options. But he decided to join #MUFC on a short-term contract! Vivell will help in terms of transfers in the next two windows.”

Vivell spent just seven months at Chelsea between December 2022 and July 2023, but he was let go as Todd Boehly made further changes behind the scenes.

The German has also spent time with RB Leipzig, meaning he has experienced working in a multi-club model, something United are now involved in with INEOS owning other sides.

Vivell has plenty of experience working in recruitment for some big clubs around Europe, and Ratcliffe is clearly doing everything he can to ensure United’s transfer strategy improves. It’s been a major problem for the Red Devils in recent years and Ratcliffe will be hoping to steer them in the right direction.

Now, the Reds have been handed a further boost in their pursuit of the midfielder.

As Ugarte is currently away on international duty at the Copa America, he’ll struggle to negotiate with clubs directly until he returns from the United States. Therefore, such conversations will be left to his agent, Jorge Chijane, and he’s now touched on the likelihood of the player leaving Paris Saint-Germain this summer.

Speaking to O Jogo, cited by The Mirror, Chijane revealed that there was another Premier League club considering a move for the 23-year-old Uruguayan.

“Liverpool? There is a lot of talk but it is not the only club. There are others. There are many possibilities on the table,” he declared before adding: “It’s almost certain that he won’t stay. It’s sure he’ll leave.

“I believe the situation will be resolved.”

Ugarte tops INEOS’ midfield shortlist as it stands

United were thought to be scouring the market for potential Casemiro replacements before eventually landing on Ugarte. They want a midfielder who can continue aiding Kobbie Mainoo’s development and helping the teenager flourish in his sophomore term of first-team action.

Whether or not Liverpool’s interest will materialise remains to be seen. They can offer the former Sporting Lisbon ace one thing United cannot – Champions League football next season.

Ugarte has only been at the Parc des Princes for a year following his £51.1 million switch last July, and it’s believed that the Ligue 1 giants would be unwilling to take much of a hit  – if any – of what they paid for him.
