“I’m personally advising him to leave Man United if he wants to enjoy football to extent…He has all it takes to be like Messi but the club he’s playing for now is the only obstacle”: National boss says Man United is not giving Alejandro Garnacho what he really need to reach its potential as he reveals the bizarre thing he learnt from the youngster in training that shocked the world

The Manchester United starlet has quite a lot in his locker already.

He’s quick, aggressive, almost completely fearless and capable of producing big moments in big games.

Just flick through his catalogue, after only one-and-a-half full seasons in the Manchester United first-team, and you’ll find a littany of headline-making contributions. Those late deciders against Fulham, Leeds United and Wolves, his extra-time assist to knock Liverpool out of the FA Cup, that overhead kick at Goodison Park, that Wembley opener versus Man City.

If you hadn’t guessed, we’re talking about Alejandro Garnacho.

So too was Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni, opening up about the rising star during his press conference ahead of the Albiceleste’s clash with Guatemala later today.

Garnacho, Scaloni says, still needs to add greater consistency to his game. Rather than come up with something sparkling every so often, the 19-year-old winger must learn to pose a threat consistently, game-by-game.

He certainly won’t be short of potential mentors in the Argentina dressing room, Lionel Messi, Angel di Maria and Atletico Madrid’s Angel Correa all part of Scaloni’s current roster.

Breakout year for Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho

“He’s training with us,” Scaloni tells TYC Sports. “He’s a guy who should not only burn in stages.”

Garnacho, who is likely to play a key role at this summer’s Copa America, has earned five caps for the World champions so far. The teenager is yet to open his international account though his performances during the most recent international break in March – one display was described as ‘electric’ – were his most convincing yet in the blue and white.

Scaloni, meanwhile, confirms that Garnacho will feature in that pre-Copa friendly with Guatemala.

“We will give him minutes,” adds the one-time West Ham defender. “He is a boy in whom we have a lot of expectations. We have to carry him in the way we believe with the entire coaching staff, talking to him and insisting that there are things he has to do more often.

“He has (to play) one-against-one. He is fast and that is what he has to do more often. That’s what we try to talk to him about.”

Copa America glory the target for Argentina

Scaloni has a point.

Garnacho can be devastating when isolated against opposition full-backs but the challenge for the former Atletico starlet is to find a way to get himself in those positions more regularly. His end-product needs some work too, although that is to be expected at such a young age.

Garnacho scored 10 goals during the 2023/24 campaign at Man United. He certainly had the chances to add at least five more to that tally, however, with his decision-making currently lacking the composure of more experienced players.

All the raw materials are there, though, for a winger who has as many goals in his first two seasons with Manchester United as the great Cristiano Ronaldo managed.

“He has enormous talent,” Argentina and Man United team-mate Lisandro Martinez tells ESPN, applauding the way Garnacho forced Josko Gvardiol into a horrific blunder before opening the scoring at Wembley.

“And he has to believe, like in the (first) goal, where he thought there was going to be a rival mistake. He himself caused Gvardiol’s mistake.

“That is the result of when you try your hardest. The truth is that I am very proud of him because he has worked hard every day, especially at his age.

“He’s a great boy. Now, we have to help him, guide him and be with him at all times.”

The spotlight is on Matthijs de Ligt as far as Manchester United are concerned.

After attempting to sign Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite, who appears to have been priced out of a move, United have switched their attention to Netherlands star De Ligt.

Most of you will remember his performances for Ajax when they last reached the Champions League semi-finals, under Erik ten Hag in 2019, but he has been unable to reach those heights at Juventus or Bayern Munich.

Ten Hag may be able to get the best out of De Ligt, which is why United are trying to sign the 24-year-old centre-back this summer.

According to BBC Sport, United believe they are making progress in their attempts to sign De Ligt.

United held talks with De Ligt’s advisors about a potential move to Old Trafford, while Bayern are trying to trim their wage bill.

De Ligt is currently in Germany with his country at the European Championship. That said, he is not starting in games under Ronald Koeman.

The Dutch defender has been unable to cement his place in the Bayern Munich team and the German club has been linked with moves for new centre-backs this summer.

No wonder they are willing to listen to offers for De Ligt, who is reportedly willing to take a pay cut at United.

United need to find a partner for Lisandro Martinez in the heart of defence following Raphael Varane’s departure. We need someone of high quality who is reliable and not injury prone.

De Ligt gives green light to Manchester United

In another update this afternoon, transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano claims De Ligt has given a green light to United after direct contacts with his camp.

Romano doesn’t believe personal terms will be an issue as his agent, Rafaela Pimenta is only negotiating with United, which is a priority of the player.

Manchester United are now set to appoint Christopher Vivell as their new director of recruitment, according to Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg.

Vivell most recently worked at Chelsea, leaving Stamford Bridge around a year ago. The 37-year-old wasn’t there long, and he’s now available once again with United looking to bring him to Old Trafford. Sir Jim Ratcliffe has stamped his authority at the club since arriving, bringing in a host of different people behind the scenes.

Dan Ashworth was recently confirmed as a new appointment, but it appears that United aren’t stopping there in terms of backroom additions.

Vivell to Man Utd Now a Done Deal

He will join as director of recruitment.

Sky Sports reporter Plettenberg has confirmed that Vivell is set to complete a move to United with immediate effect as director of recruitment. The 37-year-old will move to Old Trafford on a short-term deal and will help in terms of transfers for the Manchester club…

“Understand it’s a DONE DEAL: Christopher Vivell is set to join Manchester United with immediate effect as their new Director of Recruitment! All that’s missing is the work permit for the 37 y/o. The former Technical Director from Chelsea with many options. But he decided to join #MUFC on a short-term contract! Vivell will help in terms of transfers in the next two windows.”

Vivell spent just seven months at Chelsea between December 2022 and July 2023, but he was let go as Todd Boehly made further changes behind the scenes.

The German has also spent time with RB Leipzig, meaning he has experienced working in a multi-club model, something United are now involved in with INEOS owning other sides.

Vivell has plenty of experience working in recruitment for some big clubs around Europe, and Ratcliffe is clearly doing everything he can to ensure United’s transfer strategy improves. It’s been a major problem for the Red Devils in recent years and Ratcliffe will be hoping to steer them in the right direction.

Now, the Reds have been handed a further boost in their pursuit of the midfielder.

As Ugarte is currently away on international duty at the Copa America, he’ll struggle to negotiate with clubs directly until he returns from the United States. Therefore, such conversations will be left to his agent, Jorge Chijane, and he’s now touched on the likelihood of the player leaving Paris Saint-Germain this summer.

Speaking to O Jogo, cited by The Mirror, Chijane revealed that there was another Premier League club considering a move for the 23-year-old Uruguayan.

“Liverpool? There is a lot of talk but it is not the only club. There are others. There are many possibilities on the table,” he declared before adding: “It’s almost certain that he won’t stay. It’s sure he’ll leave.

“I believe the situation will be resolved.”

Ugarte tops INEOS’ midfield shortlist as it stands

United were thought to be scouring the market for potential Casemiro replacements before eventually landing on Ugarte. They want a midfielder who can continue aiding Kobbie Mainoo’s development and helping the teenager flourish in his sophomore term of first-team action.

Whether or not Liverpool’s interest will materialise remains to be seen. They can offer the former Sporting Lisbon ace one thing United cannot – Champions League football next season.

Ugarte has only been at the Parc des Princes for a year following his £51.1 million switch last July, and it’s believed that the Ligue 1 giants would be unwilling to take much of a hit  – if any – of what they paid for him.
